Annual Ant Invasion

Yuck, last night my other half came downstairs into the kitchen to find the wall near the back door "black" with ants.  He turned the Raid on them and became a one-man massacre.  I thought it was really humid and uncomfortable last night - obviously the ants thought it was a good time to have their Annual Ball.

Outside, that's fine!  But in the kitchen?  Really not!  I asked him what he meant by "black" with ants.  He explained that a large portion of the wall was black with them, whereas the rest of the wall "just" had them crawling all over it.  Horrible!  He did hoover it all up and make it look nice again when the culling was over, which made it a bit more bearable.

Does anyone else have problems with annual invasions?  Are they living in our foundations or something?   Please feel free to comment!  Just click on "comments" below and then on "Post a comment".

‘Your story sounds familiar’ I have exactly the same problem and the ants are getting worse. When I open my back door there are swarms of ants and flying ants and they are getting in to my kitchen from under the skirting board. I have used every pesticide they sell in the supermarkets and nothing works. It is now time to call in the ‘pest control’ and hopefully good riddance forever…!

I think they are living in the cavity of my wall. yuk

Ewww, sounds nasty, and very similar to our issue indeed! We intend to wait until the end of the season (having filled in all gaps - there were no ants in the kitchen this evening) and then fill the space with insulation foam. Hopefully that will put them off nexy year. If not, we'll have to call in Pest Control too.

Hi Catherine,

I too have ants. We have just returned from a two week holiday to find ants everywhere in the kitchen. There certainly was no left over food around to be attracting them. I have mixed up a paste of equal quantities of honey and borax and now have 3 lots of that scattered on the kitchen bench and you can't see the 'bait' for ants. They eat it and take it back to their nest and when they die, the other ants eat them and then they die etc and within 3 to 4 days, there will not be one single ant to be seen. They are also after water so I am wondering if this is happening because it has been so dry. I think that we may be in for a lot of rain. This is my theory anyway. This mixture is certainly worth a try before costly measures. Good luck, Jan.

Are you sure the cats didn't invite them? Or maybe they just wanted to visit *your* house to have *their* picnic! :) :) :)
